The Display's The Thing

Crap.

Now I really want one.

While I'm out of the office this week, I've been planting the seeds for upgrading my phone. (My phone itself is eligible for upgrading now; but my plan doesn't expire until October.) I've posted before about how much the iPhone intrigues me, particularly with its new release this Friday. But I wanted to take some time to look at other models, other choices.

I haven't exactly been bowled over.

My runner-up for the iPhone was the LG Voyager. But though it has an excellent touchpad, its display glares out in the daylight--a poor feature with my current phone that I don't want to repeat. One sales rep I was speaking with a couple of days ago told me that she thinks they all do that. Seriously? Were manufacturers so short-sighted that they didn't foresee people wanting to make use of their phone displays while standing outside? Also, frankly, the Voyager's display isn't the nice large size of the iPhone's.

I also took a look at AT&T's Tilt phone, also with a nice touchpad and touch screen. But too pricey. This thing, like the iPhone, was made for people doing a lot of interaction with the Internet--and while I seldom never say never, I'm not interested in navigating the Internet on a phone's display with a phone's controls. So if I'm going to pay for such a phone, I want a minimum price.

(By the way, since they're not really just phones anymore, don't we need a new term for these units? Something like "cell unit"? People could still abbreviate it with "cell," too.)

So today, while picking up my comics stash, I'm going to step into the AT&T store two doors down and take a look at the iPhone's display--the first iPhone, of course. I didn't see anything about a display upgrade, so I'm going to assume it's comparable to the one coming out on Friday. I'll smile pleasantly at the store attendant who hands it to me, motion for him/her to step out the door with me, cross my fingers, and turn it on. If the display is crystal-clear and readable--and if the iPhone allows me to upload my own ringtones to it--sold, American. I'll live with the sealed battery, with the lack of video, and other curious omissions. And this new model will hopefully have its bugs shaken out in the time until my current plan expires.

And yeah, even if its display is a wash (get it? ha ha), I may buy it anyway.

Shut up. You know how I am by now.

I'm definitely getting the 3G iPhone. V. excited actually.

I can't wait to hear.

I hate getting new technology. I've had my Blackberry since November and I *still* don't know what all it does.

The Blackberry was okay, but I didn't care for the tiny touchpad buttons--and the fact that the touchpad took up almost half the front panel.

I own a Tilt. I owned the model before it as well (Cingular 8525), and the one before that (Cingular 8125). I was pretty loyal to the brand (HTC makes them). But after the problems with the Tilt, I will never buy one again.

The display sucks, there is something seriously wrong with the video drivers in the phone (when you flip the screen, it takes it six seconds to 'flip' the display to the correct orientation), you can't record video worth a damn, it can't play music very well (no headphone jack -- you have to use Bluetooth headsets)...

I am definitely in line for an iPhone 3G, even though I've been a very strong Windows Mobile supporter over the past few years. I'm over it. I'm tired of squinting at blurry/jagged fonts.

I'm a huge iTunes user -- I download dozens of TV shows from it every month since I no longer have cable (it's cheaper to download what I watch than to subscribe), and have about 90 gigs of music from iTunes (I'm lazy, and it's easier to buy it on iTunes than search elsewhere). So the iPhone is tempting to me just for the sync capabilities.

My only 'holdback' is I really really want a 32GB or 64GB model -- and I'm only six months into my 2 year contract with the Tilt. I'm going to wait until September to see if they release one at the annual iPod announcement..

Good to know on the Tilt. I wasn't crazy about the Microsoft GUI, myself.

BTW:

I just call them 'mobiles' now. :)

That's as good a term as any. Though I see the term being used to distinguish so-called "smart phones."

All cellphone screens will glare in the sun.

Hell, pretty much all displays will glare in the sun even displays with anti glare/anti reflection coatings will do horrible in bright light.

I've used my aunt's iPhone in the sun before and it wasn't utterly horrible—from what I remember—but you really do need some shade if you're going to do more than dial a number or something.

I thought just cupping my hand over the display to shade it would do the trick--but it wasn't fooled. The fiend still knew I was in broad daylight.
