Damn, Axl, You're So Hot

I don't know of anyone who is trapped in limbo and happy about it. But in the case of upgrading my phone, limbo--though feeling like shackles around my wallet--is good for me right now.

My two choices for upgrading have narrowed down to the LG Voyager and the iPhone. (Well, so far. Another thing about limbo is that it keeps your options open.) Consider:
  • My current phone plan doesn't expire until October. But...
  • My phone becomes eligible for a free upgrade next week. Clever how they do that, isn't it. They dangle a new phone in front of you like a carrot on a stick--and before you know it, you're locked into another two-year plan before you can even think about shifting to another carrier.
  • The Voyager is available now. The iPhone doesn't go on the market until July 11. However...
  • There's plenty of time between July and October to weigh the reviews on the iPhone, as well as for Apple to correct any flaws/bugs that crop up post-release.

So, really, it all works out for me. If I follow Axl Rose's sage advice:
"...take it slow
And it'll work itself out fine
All we need is just a little patience
"

To which he wisely added:
"...little patience, mmm yeah, ooh yeah"

And Apple still needs to work on that sealed battery thing. But they have plenty of time. Lucky for them I'm in limbo.

If they keep upgrading the hardware at this rate, the sealed battery won't make much difference since you'll be buying a new one before the old can die anyway. ;)

That's a good point! Maybe they'll shift to firmware upgrades after this model is released, at least for awhile. I thought of the first one as beta, anyway.

Doubt it. 4G networks will start coming online at the end of this year. Those'll require entirely new phone chipsets.

Tsk. Figures! Though I find it hard to believe that Apple would launch another iPhone so soon. They're going to start pissing off a lot of people.

I'd bet on a once a year refresh, like most cell phone makers do with their products.

I'm not that familiar with the Voyager, but I do know that the iPhone requires a different (probably more expensive) calling plan then what you're probably using now. And if you want to use the internet or email function, you'll need to add a data plan onto it as well. I mean, it does work on wi-fi, but I dunno how convenient that is for ya. Something to keep in mind for sure. I'd say it's worth it if you could use a new iPod...in that sense, the $199 price tag makes it a good deal.

I know one thing for sure, at least--whatever phone I select, I won't be using it to access the Internet. My job doesn't require it; and besides, the Internet and mobile displays just don't mix yet, even with the iPhone's improvements. I'm far more productive at my desktop station.

You say that now, until you get a phone that can access the internet. Especially the iPhone, which renders pages identically to a desktop.

Whoa, hoss, not so identical--at a much smaller size. ;) I've gotten quite used to 1280 x 1024 resolution on a large desktop display. And aside from that, most of my Internet work/play is done at home--not to mention that my typing speed on a regular keyboard can run circles around a mobile "keypad." For sheer ease of use, mobile platforms have got a ways to go. Though users who have migrated to mobile Internet out of convenience to their schedules are probably pleased.

All 3G smart phones (from AT&T, at least) require an unlimited data plan. In which case, the plan costs $39.99/mo for 450 minutes (+rollover), plus $29.99 for unlimited data, plus $5/mo for 200 SMS (or $20 for unlimited SMS).

Same as the iPhone.

No, I see what he's saying. And unless I'm mistaken, upgrading to Voyager would require upgrading to a more expensive plan. What you've listed is almost precisely what I'm paying now (minus the data cost); but should I get the Voyager phone, that's likely to increase. I'll have to wait until the dust settles and I'm ready to make up my mind to be sure.

Damn those phone contracts. We have contracts here too, but I have never been on one. I pay an optional £10 (I guess about $20) a month to get 300 text inclusive, and then the use of the £10 spent. I say optional as I can choose to pay or not. Usually i pay one month, (use the free text) pay the second month) use the fre text) and then I have £20 pon my phone, so the third month (the month I am in now) I just use up the cash on the phone for text and the odd call.

That £10 would be £30 on contract where they give me 300 free text (or more) and airtime. However i hardly make any phonecalls to use up airtime. Its like giving a vegetarian 5 chickens a month when they dont eat meat, totally usefless.

It took me a long time to shift over from my landline to cell. And when I did, the various phone plans took me by surprise. Suddenly I had to calculate how many minutes I might use per month, add in various fees and text usage--when it used to be so simple. But then, almost everything used to be simple, I guess. ;)
