Where YOU decide
which character out-whumps the other in catty dialogue.

THE CONTENDERS:

vs.
Kim Novak
as Lola Brewster
  Elizabeth Taylor
as Marina Rudd

The Stakes:

During a town jubilee, Marina, an actress who's been away from the industry for awhile because of a breakdown, is hosting a party--when in walks Lola, who just happens to be married to Martin Fenn, the producer who's bankrolling Marina's next picture. Fenn thought Lola's appearance with Marina would be good publicity, while Lola is delighted to show how she's thrived in Marina's absence. Marina, who knew nothing of Lola's arrival, grits her teeth at seeing her old rival again.

Who comes out on top?

Ring the gong and make the call.

Ooooh, this is a tough one.

First of all, I have to say that I've always thought Liz Taylor was a bad actress. She's chewed so much scenery over the years that she's still shitting splinters from Cleopatra. Plus, Kim Novak was in one of my favorite Hitchcock films, and here, she gives as good as she gets.

That said, I have to give the edge to Liz, both for the parting shot and for tit-for-tat throughout. She didn't start the fight, but she finished it.

Taylor has performed in so many "epics" and other work where it seemed more important to marquee "Elizabeth Taylor" that it's easy to overlook her acting ability. But I've seen some stuff from her that proved to me that, when the material is up to it, she can sink her teeth into it with the best of them. Take any adaptations of Tennessee Williams' work, for example (e.g., Suddenly, Last Summer). Williams' writing is intense and, at times, incomprehensible; but Taylor treated it seriously and delivered scenes that I frankly thought would have been beyond her.

She was phenomenal in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? I'll give her that. :-)

That was a great line, wasn't it? And it was just as effective off-camera!

I saw that movie when I was a kid, and just saw it again last year. I loved it, so many good one liners.
